!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I mean it’s sure cutting it a lil’ bit too close. It’s right up there with a Black Ford Explorer Sport
On the plus side, everyone moves over when you want to pass.

My wife’s been flipped off for driving this:
Strangely enough, no police departments near us even USE Dodge vehicles.
It’s also been confused for an Uber Black. Good thing the doors were locked...

Our local PD now has both a Maroon and a Silver unmarked Explorers. I 100% think they should be illegal.

I had the exact same thought yesterday while stopped for some utility work. A Tahoe just like this with jet black tint drove by and the Cop was clearly eyeing it because even he had to make sure it wasn’t a police car. Our town’s force has this figured out, and only orders their Tahoes in black with faint gold liveries instead of their usual black/white massive shield.

you know, its NOT the first time I’ve seen a durango and thought: oh shit its the fuzz.
then 10 seconds later remembered that the fuzz doesnt use these
![]() 04/03/2018 at 11:53 |

That’s just silly. I would never think PDs would use a Durango. Now, people who drive used Ford Interceptors in flat black or white with the door pillar spot lights still attached are a whole different thing...

unmarked/under marked police cars should be illegal. This is my hill to die on.

I own a Ford interceptor. A Crown Victoria. It’s my profile picture.

I am automatically on the alert anytime I see a Tahoe. I run a Radar Detector but still...I have seen a beige one roll up to an accident where I was a witness and there was no fucking way I would have known until he stopped right next to me and I saw the interior lights above the rear-view mirror. There is just one Explorer the nearby county uses which is exactly like an Explorer Sport. Also one Taurus. Rest are Chargers.

The one where I work has had a long history of Chrysler fanboyism, to the point of using Durangos and even Dakotas , and this was when nobody bought Chrysler.

We’ve had issues around here where people have been “pulled over” by an unmarked car only to get robbed. I will never stop for an unmarked car unless I call 911 first and my wife knows to do the same. Also, if someone needs help, how do I know to go looking for an unmarked car when a marked car is actually there to spot and not just for profit?
![]() 04/03/2018 at 12:02 |

Still got the spot light? Don’t take it personally, but if I passed on you the road I might think you suck.

We have a couple customers that are either in private security, railroad security, or some smaller departments from towns quite a ways away that use Durangos.
Older Explorers with black grilles are hard to differentiate.... is that a roof rack or a lightbar???
![]() 04/03/2018 at 12:10 |

That was a big problem around Birmingham, AL about a decade ago. People were buying Crown Vics (probably from police auctions) and putting lights in them and everything to pull people over and rob them. A lady who worked for us at the time had one of them try and pull her over, she called her husband first to let him know what was happening and that she was not stopping until she got home, then called 911 to do the same. They quickly sent a patrol car or two to her house. Needless to say the person(s) drove off. Don’t remember if they chased, or what happened after that though.

Th one I remember was a year or so ago here in Nashville but it was a red rental spec Camaro that they put windshield lights in. They hit like 2-4 car before getting caught.

Do any police departments use Durangos? Our Paramedics use them for rapid response (usually over dose related on the east side).

A few years back I saw an unmarked dark blue Dodge Grand Caravan with DARK tint and all the undercover police lights on it pull someone over on the interstate in the middle of the day. Should be illegal to have an unmarked car to pull over people.

they have golfs and peugeots too..... no car is safe in this country (well....actually... if you see an explorer.... thats not a cop.... spot em a mile away if they drove those)

You can also get wig wag systems for your headlights. It’s entirely too easy to impersonate a police car.

![]() 04/03/2018 at 12:23 |

I think uniformed police should also wear dayglo jackets. A few years ago, my family was in DC and my oldest got separated from us near the White House. I went to the first cop I could find, and he was found in a matter of just a couple of minutes. Finding a cop near the WH isn’t hard at all, but on any other street it can be difficult. They should be the brightest damned thing around, and easy to spot.
![]() 04/03/2018 at 12:29 |

I mean, I guess I can understand people just seeing the lights and stopping (especially if it’s night), but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Cop Camaro that wasn’t just a marketing car, and even then they’ve not been base spec.
Do they actually use Camaros in Nashville?
![]() 04/03/2018 at 12:30 |

They don’t but Nashville is heavily trafficked by those from out of town since I65, I40, and I24 all go through downtown. I have seen LX470 used though so who knows...

Agreed. There are good reasons for cops to not be conspicuous in certain situations, but regular beat cops and the like should be really obvious.

What? I check my speed when ever I see a black (sheriffs) or silver (ohio staties use silver) explores. And silver tahoes (again staties). Ohio also uses really thin lightbars that are easily confused for luggage racks.

Move to ohio, that is actually illegal for any misdemeanor (i.e. most traffic laws). It must be marked and have a mounted light. And while staties have unmarked cars, they don’t use them for much else than transportation. Source below and buddies dad and brother are staties.
Also couldn’t find the law but, I know the law enforcement car have to be visible to give a ticket. Also they have to have at least marker lights on at night.

You know, that was my issue with this when I saw it. The cop was kind of driving like a dick. He was trying to close the space and not letting the Sequoia in. Just let the guy in.
![]() 04/03/2018 at 13:07 |
|
I agree. And not just because of some feeling that it’s easier to break the law. A marked cop car will slow down traffic just by being there, therefor making the roads a little bit safer just by their presence. And, a marked car makes it easier to spot if one is pulling you over. Many people wouldn’t know if the car pulling them is a cop or not if they weren’t marked.
My township has a few black cruisers with matte black markings. That just seems sleezy and a way to generate revenue.
![]() 04/03/2018 at 13:09 |
|
He was just fishing for ticket revenue. Heck, I’ve heard of them goading people into racing off the lights only to nail the brakes, cut behind and pull them over as soon as they got going fast enough.
![]() 04/03/2018 at 13:13 |
|
Someone posted a video in this thread showing a red challenger puling someone over but the car in front of them didn’t move for like 5 seconds because why would i be looking for a red challenger to have lights on? Roof bar is one thing, but unmarked hidden lights? Nope.
![]() 04/03/2018 at 13:14 |
|
Ohio nope, if it was silver yes because ohio staties and light bars that look like roof racks. Sheriff’s and locals only use explorers which is mainly black, white, or silver.
You will normally get a mean look here if you have a silver explorer/tahoe/charger with blacked out rims because that was the only reason why you bought it. Everyone in ohio knows that scheme is universal with staties.

It has no markings of a police vehicle and its not trying to pull anyone over, therefore it’s not impersonating anyone but a blacked out Tahoe.

NYPD uses Toyota Camry, Subaru Legacy, Jeep Cherokees, Honda Accords, Infiniti G37Xs and more plus a host of Malibus/Impalas all in normal “civilian” garb. All unmarked and meant to catch you. Prime example:
Here’s a Mercedes GLC in undercover form:

LOL you took that title too seriously, I meant that as joke to say indicate that it looks too close to those blacked out undercover Tahoes that PDs use.
![]() 04/03/2018 at 14:47 |

That’s my point, they use them because they’re impersonating a civilian, not because they look like a police car.

![]() 04/03/2018 at 16:15 |

A marked cop car will slow down traffic just by being there, therefor making the roads a little bit safer just by their presence.
I fundamentally disagree with the second part of this statement. What they do is turn into a rolling roadblock below the natural speed of the roadway, regardless of what the signs say. As such they frustrate many, if not most of the other drivers and make it more likely for them to do something stupid.
Slower=/=safer.
![]() 04/03/2018 at 16:20 |

Traffic doesn’t have to move over. It’s the courteous thing to do, but you don’t have to, and what the Sequoia did is illegal and dangerous.

Around me, cops often drive any plain dark color Tahoes - grey, silver, black, blue, so basically any skinny blonde lacrosse mom looks like a cop at first glance. And the state police are all dark blue, with no markings on the front or back, and they are everywhere.

No. Eventually, when I get another daily driver, this car will be fully restored to Pierce County Sheriff livery and equipment, and used for car shows and performance demonstrations.
